War crimes, accountability and the media's role in conflict reporting

At considerable personal risk, journalists play a vital role in conflict reporting and uncovering abuses of power and accountability, by states or individuals. The military photographer known only as Caesar smuggled out of Syria unseen images of the mass atrocities and crimes against humanity carried out by the Syria regime. Journalists reporting on board the Freedom Flotilla convoy to Gaza in 2010 knew the risk of military intervention by the IDF which became a brutal reality. This workshop addresses the question “in an age of fake news and alternative facts, how does the media discharge its responsibility to expose persons or regimes accused of war crimes and breaches of international human rights law?”

Turkophobia, Islamophobia and the rise of populism in Europe

The volume of anti-Muslim output in our media and in public discourse has been steadily rising over the years reaching a crescendo in the EU referendum last year when post Brexit hate crimes spiked. Turkey as a country and Turkish communities across Europe have become synonymous with the pervasive negative treatment of Muslims in the British press the consequences of which reverberate in our politics, media and local communities. Why is this happening and what can we do about it as journalists and citizens?

Muslim Communities - An insight into building a strong relationship with the Media - with Mend

The Muslim community can often be an extremely cautious community especially when working with journalists and the media. This session considers how to build a positive relationship with an ever complex and heterogenous community. Questions like, how do I get access to the community? What cultural and religious sensitivities should I be weary off? How do I better understand these communities will all be discussed.
