Turkophobia, Islamophobia and the rise of populism in Europe

The volume of anti-Muslim output in our media and in public discourse has been steadily rising over the years reaching a crescendo in the EU referendum last year when post Brexit hate crimes spiked. Turkey as a country and Turkish communities across Europe have become synonymous with the pervasive negative treatment of Muslims in the British press the consequences of which reverberate in our politics, media and local communities. Why is this happening and what can we do about it as journalists and citizens?
